What this line is made of, and where it comes from

The line this house was built on, and still the widest of the five. Attars distilled in Kannauj, agarwood and bakhoor traded out of Muscat, prayer mats woven in Bhadohi, tasbih strung in Firozabad glass and Moradabad brass.

Attars

Deg and bhapka distillation, which is the Kannauj method: the still is copper, the receiver holds sandalwood oil rather than alcohol, and the distillate goes straight into it. Rose and khus are the two everyone knows. Mitti is baked earth — fired discs distilled after the first rain, which is why petrichor has a price and a season.

Sold in 3ml phials rather than by the tola. The discovery set exists because a tola is a large commitment to a fragrance nobody has smelled yet.

Oud and bakhoor

Agarwood graded on resin content rather than on the look of the chip. Every lot travels with CITES Appendix II paperwork, and where that paperwork is not there we do not buy the lot. Oud oil is sold in small volumes because it is priced by the gram.

Bakhoor tablets in rose oud and in amber, pressed rather than dipped, and charcoal discs by the twenty. The mabkhara is brass and unlacquered like the rest of the metal in this house — it tarnishes and cleans up rather than peeling.

Janamaz and tasbih

Woven prayer mats from Bhadohi with a dense pile and a bound edge, and a printed travel janamaz that folds into a pocket and weighs almost nothing. Tasbih at 33 and at 99 — wooden beads turned and strung by hand, glass pressed in Firozabad on the same furnaces that press bangle glass.

The home

Ayat al-Kursi cast in brass, hanging lanterns pierced for candlelight, and a wooden corner shelf sized for a prayer space rather than for a hallway.

What we do not sell

Zamzam water. It cannot be exported from Saudi Arabia for commercial resale, and anything offered as such through a trade channel should be treated with suspicion. The commemorative plate we do sell is a plate.

Mushaf copies of the Qur’an. They carry handling and storage expectations we are not set up to meet across a parcel network — the same reason we do not stock Judaica carrying Hebrew text or anything needing a sofer.

Nothing we ship has been blessed, consecrated or read over at our end. That belongs to the person who buys it, and to whoever they take it to.
