What this line is made of, and where it comes from

The largest of the new lines, and the one closest to home. Most of it is made within a day of Delhi: brass spun and cast in Moradabad, dhoop rolled in Mysuru and Bengaluru, wicks and camphor out of Tamil Nadu, rudraksha graded at Haridwar.

Puja brass

Aarti thali sets, panchpatra and achmani, kalash, temple bells, diya sets and the conch. Moradabad has worked brass since the seventeenth century and still supplies most of the temple metal in northern India. We buy unlacquered, which means it tarnishes and cleans up rather than peeling — a lacquered puja vessel looks better for six months and worse forever after.

The steel thali set is there for daily and institutional use. Temples running worship every morning do not want to tamarind a brass tray at the end of it, and steel is the honest answer.

Dhoop, agarbatti and sambrani

Mysore sandalwood agarbatti rolled onto bamboo with a gum binder and no dipping solvent. Bambooless agarwood dhoop bound with halmaddi. Loose halmaddi for anyone who remembers what temple dhoop smelled like before synthetic binders replaced it, and pressed sambrani cups that light without charcoal.

Malas

Five-mukhi rudraksha strung at 108 with a meru, X-rayed by lot and shipped with the face-count report. One-mukhi is X-rayed individually, because that end of the market has a long history of carved fakes and a report on the lot is not good enough. Tulsi from Vrindavan and sandalwood from Mysuru against a depot record. Bodhi seed malas sit on the Buddhist page.

Camphor, wicks and lamps

Pressed camphor tablets that burn away without residue, long hand-rolled cotton wicks with no wax stiffener, brass diyas with a drawn wick lip, and deep-welled ghee lamp vessels. The ghee vessels ship empty: ghee is a dairy product, we do not hold a food licence, and we would rather sell you the brass than cut a corner on FSSAI.

What we do not sell

No murtis and no figurative idols. Not a judgement — it is a question of handling. A murti is chosen, and often consecrated, in a way that does not survive being picked from a grid and couriered. We sell the objects that surround one.
