Palo Santo Sticks

Bursera graveolens, the tree South American Spanish calls holy wood. The aromatic resin only develops in wood that has died and lain on the forest floor for several years, so the material is gathered rather than felled, and in Peru that gathering is licensed. Our lots come from a permitted cooperative in Piura and we hold the permit reference. The wood is cut into finger-length sticks; one is lit, allowed to catch, then blown out to smoulder on a heatproof dish. The smoke is sweet and resinous with a citrus edge, quite unlike sage.

Apply a small amount to the pulse points — wrist, neck or behind the ear. Attars are undiluted, so one pass of the roll-on is enough; the scent opens over the first twenty minutes and settles close to the skin. For burners and incense, use in a ventilated room on a heatproof surface and never leave anything lit unattended.

External use only. Not a medicine.
