Halmaddi Temple Dhoop

Halmaddi is the grey resin tapped from Ailanthus triphysa, and it is what gave temple dhoop its texture before synthetic binders replaced it. Supply collapsed for years when tapping was restricted to protect the trees; it is available again now under managed tapping, at a fraction of the old volume, which is why it is priced the way it is. Worked here with a little honey and sandalwood powder into a soft loose paste. Pinched off in small amounts and burned on charcoal. Supplied in a lidded tin. Not for eating.

Apply a small amount to the pulse points — wrist, neck or behind the ear. Attars are undiluted, so one pass of the roll-on is enough; the scent opens over the first twenty minutes and settles close to the skin. For burners and incense, use in a ventilated room on a heatproof surface and never leave anything lit unattended.

Care

Keep the tin closed and cool. The paste is meant to stay soft; it firms in cold and loosens in the hand.
