Sandalwood Mala — 108 Bead

Turned from Santalum album heartwood in Mysuru, where sandalwood has been a state-controlled crop for over two centuries and every log carries a depot record. The scent is in the wood and not on it; nothing here is dipped or dosed with fragrance oil, which is why the smell is quiet at first and comes up under the warmth of the hand. One hundred and eight beads and a meru on waxed cotton, knotted between beads. Used for japa across Hindu and Buddhist practice and, in plain strung form, in Sufi counting as well. Supplied in a cotton pouch inside a card box.

Apply a small amount to the pulse points — wrist, neck or behind the ear. Attars are undiluted, so one pass of the roll-on is enough; the scent opens over the first twenty minutes and settles close to the skin. For burners and incense, use in a ventilated room on a heatproof surface and never leave anything lit unattended.

External use only. Not a medicine.

Materials

Santalum album heartwood, waxed cotton thread. Cotton pouch, card box.

Care

Keep out of direct sun, which fades the colour and dries the scent out. Never wash; a dry cloth is enough.
