Attar versus perfume: what actually differs

People use the two words interchangeably and then wonder why the bottles behave completely differently. The distinction is not marketing. It is a difference in what is actually in the bottle.

What is in a perfume

A modern eau de parfum is aromatic compounds dissolved in ethanol, usually somewhere between fifteen and twenty percent concentrate and the rest alcohol and a little water. The alcohol is the delivery system: it flashes off the skin within seconds, throwing the fragrance outward as it goes.

That is why perfume has a projection — a cloud around the wearer — and why the opening is the loudest part.

What is in an attar

An attar is aromatic material distilled directly into a base oil, traditionally sandalwood. There is no alcohol and usually no dilution. What you have is concentrate and fixative, nothing else.

Oil does not evaporate the way alcohol does. It sits on the skin and warms slowly, which means an attar has almost no projection and a very long life. It works close to the body.

How this changes the wearing

A perfume is sprayed at a distance and is meant to be noticed across a room. An attar is applied to pulse points, one pass, and is meant to be noticed by someone standing next to you. Neither is better. They are answers to different questions.

The practical consequence is dosage. People new to attar tend to over-apply, because the first thirty seconds are quieter than they expect. Then twenty minutes later it has warmed up and they are wearing three times what they meant to. One pass of the roll-on is the correct amount.

Longevity

An attar will usually outlast a perfume by hours, sometimes by a day. It stays close throughout rather than fading from a loud opening to a quiet base — the arc is flatter.

Storage

Alcohol-based perfume is fairly stable but degrades in light and heat. Attar is oil, so it thickens in cold and thins in warmth, and a resin-heavy one will darken over months. None of that is spoilage. Keep the cap closed, keep it out of direct sun, and it will be fine for years.

Which to buy

If you want to be smelled across a room, buy a perfume. If you want something that stays with you, that you can wear in a mosque or an office without imposing on anyone, and that does not involve alcohol, buy an attar.

Attars are cosmetic products for external use only. They are not medicines.
